Lake Michigan Charter Fishing King Salmon
Lake Michigan charter fishing becoming widely popular in the early 1970's due to the introduction of salmon in Lake Michigan. The salmon where introduced in 1966 to help curb the over population of Alewives, which were an invasive bait fish that took over the Great Lakes. The first salmon stocked was the Coho salmon and this was hugely successful. Shortly after the Chinook salmon was stocked in the lake and from that moment on Lake Michigan became one of the most outstanding fisheries in the world. Charter fishing took off and the new home of the Chinook "King" salmon was the place to go to catch salmon. A lot has changed over the years but Lake Michigan is still a great salmon fishery after more than 50 years. This picture shows a charter customer who caught a 26 pound Chinook salmon in mid August. Mature salmon will range 15 to 30 pounds, depending on how the year class fed throughout its life cycle. This particular year a big Chinook salmon was around 25 pounds, so this fish was a true a trophy. The lady in the picture reeled this fish in with no help.
